Incorporated in 1965, Vedanta Limited is a diversified natural resources company operating in the mining and metals sector. The company is engaged in the business of exploration and production of zinc, lead, silver, iron ore, copper, aluminum, and oil & gas.
The company caters across India, South Africa, Namibia, and Australia and has several sub-brands such as Hindustan Zinc, Cairn Oil & Gas, and Bharat Aluminium Company Limited (BALCO), which focus on specific resource extraction and production.
Vedanta Limited was established in 1965 by Anil Agarwal as Sesa Goa Limited, which, during April 2015, was renamed to Vedanta Limited. In 2001, the company acquired 51% stakes in BALCO and 26% shares in Hindustan Zinc Limited in 2002. Continuing its acquisition spree, it took over 51% stakes in Konkola Copper Mines and 51% stakes in Sesa Goa Limited in 2004 and 2007, respectively. In 2023, the company ventured into the semiconductor and glass display.
Aluminium: Vedanta is the largest primary aluminium producer in India, with an installed capacity in India at 2.4 MTPA.
Zinc, Lead, and Silver: Vedanta is the third largest zinc producer in India with a 75% market share in the primary Zinc market of India.
Copper: The company is one of the largest producers of copper in Indiaserving housing wire, cable, transformer, and electrical profile industries.
Oil & Gas: Vedanta operates in this vertical via Cairn India, the largest private oil & gas exploration and production company in India.
