Tata Steel is the second-largest steel company in India in terms of market capitalization. The company’s portfolio includes steel products, with a product range that consists of flat products and long products, as well as some non-steel products such as ferro alloys and minerals, tubes, and bearings. It has presence across the entire value chain of steel manufacturing, from mining and processing iron ore and coal to producing and distributing finished products.
The company was initially incorporated as The Tata Iron and Steel Company Limited on August 26, 1907, by Jamsetji N. Tata. Later in 2005, it was renamed to Tata Steel Limited.
In 1910, the company obtained its first colliery. In 1938, it introduced the electric steel-making process, which was used to produce high-grade iron and steel castings. The company’s share price was first listed on the BSE in 1937 and on the NSE in 1998. In 2003, it launched its first branded cold rolled steel product called “Tata Steelium”.
This was followed by the acquisition of NatSteel in 2005 and Corus during 2006-07. In 2016, it started commercial production at the first phase of the Kalinganagar Project, and in 2021, it divested its entire stake in NatSteel for an equity value of $172 million. In 2025, the company was recognised as a Steel Sustainability Champion 2025 by World Steel for the eighth consecutive year.
Tata Steel primarily generates revenue from selling its manufactured steel and generated 98% of the revenue from this vertical during the financial year ending March 2024. A small chunk of revenue also comes from the sale of power and water, primarily from its captive utilities and surplus generation capacities.
