Founded in 2004 by Rana Kapoor and Ashok Kapur, Yes Bank operates in the banking and financial services sector in India. Headquartered in Mumbai, the bank offers corporate and retail banking, digital banking, and various financial products like loans and credit cards.
Incorporated in 2003, the bank received its banking license from the RBI in 2004. A year later, Yes Bank launched its IPO and listed on the stock exchange in July 2005.
During 2015-2018, the bank’s exposure to risky loans began to raise concerns as several big borrowers started defaulting. Following this, the RBI flagged issues with the underreporting of non-performing assets (NPAs).
In 2018, the CEO of the bank, Rana Kapoor, was denied an extension by the RBI, which later directed him to step down by January 2019. In the same year, the bank reported massive losses, increasing NPAs, and capital inadequacy. And credit rating agencies started downgrading the bank. During March 2020, SBI led a bailout of ₹7,250 crore in the bank along with the participation of other banks such as ICICI Bank, Axis Bank, HDFC, and Kotak Mahindra.
In July 2020, the bank launched its follow-on offering (FPO) of ₹15,000 crore and managed to raise ₹14,272 crore, which helped the company to improve its capital adequacy ratio.
Yes Bank offers retail banking, corporate banking, digital banking, and various financial products like loans and credit cards. The bank primarily generates revenue from its retail banking vertical.
