INDmoney Popularity Score & Breakout Stocks Methodology

INDmoney's Popularity Score and Breakout Stocks help investors understand which stocks are attracting increased attention and investment activity among INDmoney users.

These indicators are based on aggregated activity on the INDmoney platform and are designed to highlight trends in investor interest. They should not be interpreted as recommendations to buy or sell any security.

What is the INDmoney Popularity Score?

The INDmoney Popularity Score is a score from 0 to 100 that measures the relative popularity of a stock compared with other stocks in the same category.

The score considers two signals:

Search activity: How frequently investors search for the stock on INDmoney.

Purchase activity: How many investors purchase the stock through INDmoney.

A higher score indicates that a stock is receiving relatively higher combined search and purchase activity compared with its peers.

How is the Popularity Score calculated?

Search activity and purchase activity can differ significantly in scale. Therefore, the raw values are not added directly.

Instead, INDmoney compares each stock's activity with other stocks in the same category.

For every stock:

Step 1: Calculate Search Percentile

The stock's search activity is ranked against other stocks in its category.

For example, if a stock has more search activity than 80% of stocks in its category, its Search Percentile would be approximately 80.

Step 2: Calculate Purchase Percentile

The stock's purchase activity is similarly ranked against other stocks in the same category.

If its purchase activity is higher than 90% of comparable stocks, its Purchase Percentile would be approximately 90.

Step 3: Calculate the Popularity Score

The two signals are combined:

Popularity Score = 50% × Search Percentile + 50% × Purchase Percentile

The resulting value is rounded to produce a score between 0 and 100.

Example

Suppose a stock has:

Search Percentile: 72

Purchase Percentile: 91

Its Popularity Score would be:

(72 × 50%) + (91 × 50%) = 81.5

The displayed Popularity Score would therefore be approximately 82.

What is Popularity Rank?

Popularity Rank shows where a stock stands relative to other stocks within the same category.

Stocks are ordered from the highest Popularity Score to the lowest.

For example:

#1 means the stock currently has the highest combined popularity in its category.

#10 means nine stocks in the category currently have a higher Popularity Score.

Stocks are compared only with their relevant peer group. For example, Large Cap stocks are compared with other Large Cap stocks rather than with the entire stock market.

What does the change in Popularity Rank mean?

INDmoney may also show how a stock's rank has changed over time.

1-Day Change

This compares the stock's current Popularity Rank with its rank on the previous day.

For example:

▲ 3 means the stock has moved up three positions in the popularity ranking.

▼ 2 means the stock has moved down two positions.

1-Month Change

This compares the stock's current Popularity Rank with its rank approximately 30 days earlier.

This can help investors identify whether interest in a stock has been rising or falling over a longer period rather than reacting only to one day's activity.

What are Breakout Stocks?

Breakout Stocks highlight stocks experiencing a significant increase in combined investor attention and investment activity on INDmoney.

Instead of looking at activity from a single day, the methodology compares two consecutive 30-day periods.

This helps reduce the impact of short-term spikes and highlights stocks where increased interest has been sustained over a longer period.

How are Breakout Stocks identified?

For each eligible stock, INDmoney calculates:

The average Popularity Score over the latest 30 days

The average Popularity Score over the previous 30 days

The percentage increase between these two periods is then calculated.

Growth in Interest =
(Current 30-Day Average − Previous 30-Day Average) ÷ Previous 30-Day Average × 100

A stock may qualify as a Breakout Stock when its combined interest has increased by at least 70% compared with the previous 30-day period.

Why does INDmoney apply minimum activity criteria?

Large percentage increases can sometimes occur when activity starts from an extremely small base.

For example, a stock moving from a very small number of searches to slightly more searches could show a very large percentage increase even though overall investor activity remains limited.

To reduce such distortions, INDmoney applies minimum search and purchase activity requirements before a stock can qualify as a Breakout Stock.

These thresholds may vary across stock categories because typical investor activity differs between categories.

How are Breakout Stocks ranked?

Stocks that meet the breakout criteria are ranked according to the percentage increase in their average Popularity Score.

The stocks showing the strongest qualifying increase in combined interest appear higher in the Breakout Stocks list.

If fewer stocks meet the required criteria during a particular period, INDmoney may display fewer Breakout Stocks rather than include stocks that do not meet the methodology requirements.

How frequently is the data updated?

Popularity Scores and Popularity Ranks are calculated using recent activity on the INDmoney platform and are refreshed periodically.

Breakout Stocks use rolling 30-day periods and are refreshed as new activity becomes available.

Because the underlying activity changes over time, Popularity Scores, ranks and Breakout Stocks can also change.

How should investors use this data?

Popularity indicators can help investors discover:

  • Stocks receiving increasing investor attention
  • Stocks experiencing increased purchase activity
  • Changes in investor interest over time
  • Stocks showing unusually strong growth in platform activity

However, popularity does not indicate whether a stock is fundamentally strong, undervalued or suitable for a particular investor.

Investors should evaluate additional factors such as company fundamentals, valuations, financial performance, risks and their own investment objectives before making an investment decision.
